Tamkin Cup Competition results

Despite the recent influx of rays being caught from Herne Bay’s shores, just 8 Heron’s took to the beach for this years Tamkin Cup Competition on Sunday 17th March.
All returned with reasonable catches and a total of 16 rays were brought to the scales. The better fish came from reculver with Simon Stephenson and David Morris both bagging 4 a piece whilst Kevin Morris had 3. David also landed the heaviest fish of 9lbs 4.8oz but it wasn’t quite enough to overhaul Simon’s total weight.
Catches were also made up of dogfish and whiting with smaller rays coming in from Beltinge and the Kings Hall areas.

Jubilee Cup 1st Round results

Very blustery and difficult conditions greeted the 8 Heron’s taking to the shores for the 1st beach competition of the year, The Jubilee Cup 1st Round, on Sunday 27th January.
Usually this event is well attended but the 25mph WNW unsurprisingly seemed to put a fair few off. Nonetheless, a few brave souls took it on but seemingly the fish were staying home.
Lewis Perry-French reported the loss of a possible ray but that aside, just 3 rockling were weighed in, the heaviest falling to Tony Morris from Stud Hill for top spot.
Full results as follows;

1st- T. Morris, 1 fish, 4.8oz
2nd- M. Bowman, 1 fish, 3.6oz
3rd- K. Morris, 1 fish, 3oz

Maureen Cup results

Difficult NE winds greeted the 11 anglers taking to the shores for the Maureen Cup on Sunday 18th November.

The Heron Autumn Beach Festival

The Heron Autumn Beach Festival should perhaps be renamed the Whiting festival after the numbers caught in this years event on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th November bordered on the obscene.
Eleven anglers took to the beaches from Reculver to Studd Hill, both days taking part in darkness.
With whiting numbers reaching near plague proportions, there’s no wonder only a very small number of dogfish made it to the scales, D. Morris took the heaviest from Albany drive at 1lbs 5.8oz, no other species were landed.
T. Morris led the way on Saturday with a very impressive haul of 61 fish for 25lbs 15.6oz from Queensbridge Drive whilst S. Stephenson followed closely behind with 23lbs 7.8oz and B. Morris in 3rd with 20lbs 14.2oz, both fished the kings hall area.
A change of location for B. Morris on Sunday however paid dividends as he fished the harbour arm and returned with 75 fish for 30lbs exactly, winning the day.
With S. Stephenson landing 25lbs 2.8oz and T. Morris 20lbs 5.6oz it was also enough for Ben to win the tournament overall.

The 2nd round of the Jubilee cup got under way on Sunday 14th October with 9 entrants competing.
The event took place in daylight hours which proved detrimental as just one fish was weighed in by the end.

Autumn Boat Festival 2018 results

Three very different days greeted the fourteen anglers taking to the boats for the Heron’s Autumn Festival 2018 on Saturday 6th, Sunday 7th & Monday 8th October.
Saturday was misty and started off calm but the NW wind was slowly building throughout the day. Catch rates were far slower than expected with the usual hoards of whiting proving somewhat absent. Dogfish made up most of the bags along with some whiting and a showing of nice sized dabs up to 10oz.  In a slight rarity for Herne Bay waters, an undersized plaice was landed by Tony Morris and was duly returned.
T. Morris led the way with 23 fish for 23lbs 13.8oz whilst junior entrant L. Perry-French was in second with 13lbs 15.6oz. The next 5 spots were separated by little more than a pound so all was to play for on day two.
Sunday came and began with a nasty 20mph N wind. It was only the fact that the forecast predicted the wind to drop steadily throughout the day that it was deemed acceptable to fish. Not all fancied the weather however and just two boats ended up launching.
T. Morris continuing his winning streak with 24lbs of fish whilst D. Neiles came in second with 20lbs 4.6oz. Again, bags were made up of whiting, dogfish and dabs.
Conditions on Monday were far more conducive and 10 herons avoided the daily grind, taking to the boats again instead. Weights were much better overall, with T. Morris cementing the win easily, adding another 45lbs 3.2oz to his rout.
In addition to the now present whiting, dogfish and dabs however, A. Wood landed a good sized pouting, M. Zacharia bagged a lovely bass of 3lbs 12.2oz and the heaviest fish of the day fell for B. Morris with a ray of 4lbs 6.4oz.

Along with dogfish and dabs, T. Morris landed the most for the title. The talking point of the event however was a rare catch for D. Neiles with a red mullet. Dave also had the heavy fish pool with a dogfish of 1lbs 13.8oz.

‘Old Rules’ Competition results

Six Herons took up their oars for the annual ‘Old Rules’ Competition on Sunday 2nd September.
In the event anglers have 4 hours in which to fish and row to and from their chosen mark. Using just one rod each and 4 hooks maximum. The conditions weren’t ideal as a persistent easterly wind pushed through but worse still, the fishing was woeful.
In the end just one angler managed to land a fish and win the event. B. Perry-French took the title with a dogfish of 1lbs 1.4oz. Hardly any other bites were even registered by others.

1st- B. Perry-French, 1 fish, 1lbs 1.4oz

(Not the) open limits bass trophy results

Just 4 anglers headed out of Herne Bay on a very hot, sunny and extremely busy 15th July for the (Not the) open limits bass trophy.
It had been penned as a commodore competition with the plan being to fish an unfamiliar mark since the landing of bass is currently prohibited. But with the lack of members and the difficulties launching among the crowds, it was decided just to fish it as a stand alone competition.
T. Morris and B. Morris headed to the west end of the weir bank and had a very slow day indeed, typically the only fish landed were 2 bass from Tony to 3lbs 12oz which were duly returned.
D. Neiles and A. Wood faired much better at the NE corner of the bank though and managed to get among some smooth-hounds. A. Wood had the biggest at 8lbs 8oz whilst D. Neiles pipped him to top spot with 6 fish of his own.

Full results as follows;

1st- D. Neiles, 6 fish, 31lbs 13oz
2nd- A. Wood, 5 fish, 29lbs 15.5oz
