Skerry Belle charter 20th April

On Saturday 20th April, the Greenhill Club and ourselves went aboard the Skerry Belle from Ramsgate. Skippered by Roger Lenon and with the aid of deck hand Dan, we all had a really good day out.

We managed to get into some smooth hounds, thornback rays, and a couple of bass.

George Mummery had the most notable catch of the day, with a rather superb looking bass, weighing an impressive 9lbs 4oz.

Brilliant day out, and something that we will be organising again.

Jackson Cup beach competition results

For the 6th year now, the Heron’s Jackson Cup has been held in Deal and this year we had a good turn out as 14 anglers headed east on Sunday 14th April.
Limits were from the slipway at sandwich to Walmer castle and the entrants spread themselves out. A biting easterly wind prevailed throughout and things were fairly slow on the whole but nonetheless 12 managed to eek out a catch of some description. Bags were mainly made up of dogfish with a couple of whiting showing. Kevin Morris landed the heaviest fish from Chequers with a ray of 5lbs 6oz but Simon Stephenson took top honours. Lawler Pairs Boat Competition results

Sunday 7th April saw the return of the Heron’s annual Lawler Pairs Boat Competition. Whilst individual results are recorded for the championship points, the trophy is awarded to the biggest aggregate weight of entrants in their pairs.
Ten anglers set out in foggy and wet conditions which steadily improved as the day went on. The Northerly breeze dropped to near nothing by the end of the event.
Overall it was tough going, catches of rays were less prevalent as expected and even the dogfish seemed to be having a day off. Nonetheless, both species were weighed in as well as the obligatory whiting and it was nice to see Bradley Perry-French land a smoothhound around the 5lbs mark.
David Morris boated the heaviest fish of the day, a 7lbs 2oz Thornback Ray whilst cousin Ben Morris found the numbers with 4. These fish along with 20 others got him top spot whilst his partner, father Tony Morris, came in second. With a combined weight of 67lbs 3.8oz, the pair won the event.

The numbers of rays seemed to be closer in to shore with Tony Morris and Ben Morris boating 11 between them although only 6 were sizeable, whilst boats further out had greater numbers of dogfish.

The better fish came from reculver with Simon Stephenson and David Morris both bagging 4 a piece whilst Kevin Morris had 3. Jubilee Cup 1st Round results

Very blustery and difficult conditions greeted the 8 Heron’s taking to the shores for the 1st beach competition of the year, The Jubilee Cup 1st Round, on Sunday 27th January.
Usually this event is well attended but the 25mph WNW unsurprisingly seemed to put a fair few off. Nonetheless, a few brave souls took it on but seemingly the fish were staying home.
Lewis Perry-French reported the loss of a possible ray but that aside, just 3 rockling were weighed in, the heaviest falling to Tony Morris from Stud Hill for top spot.
Full results as follows;

1st- T. Morris, 1 fish, 4.8oz
2nd- M. Bowman, 1 fish, 3.6oz
3rd- K. Morris, 1 fish, 3oz
